So you want to import a car from Japan?
The car you want might not be currently available in our inventory. That’s why we offer an importing service where we guide you through the entire process of importing a car from Japan, from picking out a car on auction, shipping it, processing it through customs and getting it to your doorstep. The process of importing a car can be long and tedious, and if you’re not aware of the process, you can be prone to making mistakes that can lead to fees in the form of fines or even further delays. Our team has the experience to make the process go as smooth as possible. Moreover, we take care of all the work, so all you have to do is choose the car you want. We handle brokerage, shipping, coordination with ports and inland transportation, etc. We’ll also translate auction sheets and can even offer in person inspections to ensure the car you’re getting is the best it can be. No surprises. Getting your dream car should be a fun and easy process, so let us take care of all the work for you.
The Import Process:
You reach out to us.
Being as thorough as possible, you’ll let us what you’re looking for. It can be as vague as to a type of car, and as specific as down to the model, make, year, trim, included accessories, etc.
Provide a refundable deposit.
We require a refundable deposit in order to start our search for your vehicle. This deposit is $2,000 for vehicles under $20,000 and $4,000 for vehicles above $20,000, and will go toward the final amount of the vehicle. Change your mind or have something come up? We will refund the original amount no problem.
We Begin Searching
Once the deposit is paid we will begin our search. Many of Japan’s used vehicles are sold at various auction houses in Japan, which are usually exclusive to domestic buyers. Buying from these auction houses gives us the best selection and the lowest prices.
We will send candidates we think are good that fit within your guidelines, along with photos, translated auction report, and any other information we can offer so you can make an informed and confident decision.
Once we send you a car you want to bid on, you tell us what you’d like your highest bid to be. From there we will bid on the car for you up to your highest bid, meaning we can still get the car below your highest bid. If we win, we’ll inform you as soon as we know.
We can also purchase from dealerships in Japan, and if we find a good deal, we’ll send it your way.
After a Succesful Bid / Purchase
We’ve secured the car you wanted. But now the work begins in getting it from Japan to your home (or wherever you want it transported). The vehicle will be transported from the auction house to port where it will be stored until it’s ready to be rolled onto the ship. During this time, basic maintenance will be performed on the car and we will provide you with detailed images, interior and exterior. At this stage we can also make slight modifications to the car using parts purchased by you. Have a set of wheels you’ve been eyeing on upgarage? We’ll have them installed on the car prior to shipping. Just let us know with time.
Payment for the remaining amount will be due at this time. This amount will include the cost of the car, overseas shipping, brokerage and customs fees, duties and taxes, our service fee (always a flat rate of $1,000/ car). Usually these additional fees will add $5,000 to the original amount bid on the car, although this varies from car to car.
A $250.00 USD per day late fee will be applied if payment is not received within 10 days of vehicle purchase from auction.
The Car is Shipped via RO/RO
The vehicle you purchased is then shipped from Japan to the States via roll on - roll off shipping, meaning the car is driven on and off a dedicated automotive transport vessel. We will be able to provide you with regular updates as to the estimated arrival time and ship position while possible.
During this time, you just wait. We will take care of all the brokerage work, entry fees and paperwork, etc.
The Car Arrives at Port
Once the vehicle is offloaded at port, we will have our driver take pictures of it at port, which will then be sent to you, and then have it loaded and transported to our shop in Miami, FL to have it reconditioned and freshened up. During this time, we will also have the car vin verified, which is required prior to the car being registered in the United States.
The Car is Ready for Pickup
This is the end of the road. You can now come and pick up your vehicle. If local to the South Florida area, we can deliver the vehicle personally. We also offer free airport pickup for clients who wish to pickup their vehicle and drive it home.
Alternatively, we can arrange for domestic transportation of the car to anywhere in the United States, just let us know and we will include this in the quoted amount.
However it ends up with you, we hope that you enjoy your new (old) JDM car, and we encourage you send us updates on how you use it, what you do to it, etc!
